Big and strong shocks Health Insurance Request for Hernando County School Officials
As President Barack Obama is ready to take to the radio waves to sustain health improvement last week, Hernando school officials got a little sticker shock from their own insurance.
The district insurance carrier, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, is seeking 21.5 percent increase in tariffs.
"We hope to increase health insurance, but you do not really expect increased 21 percent," said Heather Martin, executive director of district services business. "It's very disappointing in these economic times."
The actual increase may be coming at least a few percent below that, Martin said. Last year, for example, Blue Cross began to increase 18 percent. By tweaking the plan and increased deductibles and co-pay, both parties are brought down to 12 percent.
Martin said he hoped the increase this year will be closer to 15 percent and that the district insurance committee - comprisedstaff and two union members - has made progress against the number of visitors during the talks with Blue Cross for the day Wednesday.
Blue Cross declined to comment beyond the written statement issued through spokesman Mark Wright.
